Locally grown and carefully raised food

When I lived in Massachusetts I opened a small business at the town’s farmer’s market.  It was a great experience.  I enjoyed going to the market and chatting with the growers as well as buying fresh delicious food.  A fresh picked strawberry that has been allowed to ripen on the vine is an incredible treat.  Growing up in Connecticut we ate what was in season and growing at local farms. My taste buds were spoiled by this early training

This summer I began looking for fruits and vegetables raised locally.  I was surprised when I first moved to Georgia in 2003 how little locally growth produce is available.  After all in this climate you can grow anything.  And the farmers do. But unfortunately most of the crops are contracted to large distributors, located out of state, who will repackage the produce and ship it back for sale to Georgia supermarkets.  Image how far and to how many states that Georgia peach traveled before you bought it at Public’s.

I found some local growers who sell to people through a program know as Consumer Supported Agriculture or CSA. Here is a farm that sells directly to the customer: Riverview farms If you are interested in finding out about the slow food movement look at this  site

Marc Prensky calls today’s students ‘Digital Natives’ in reference to their ease and knowledge of technology available today. Their teachers, products of a different age and technology, are ‘Digital Immigrants” . I am an immigrant in this new digital culture and I am trying to lose my accent. One source I expect to use often is Tim Wilson’s blog, The Savvy Technologist. The site is a rich treasure trove of techie stuff including podcasts which I will link/add to this site
